Self-love goes beyond materialistic gestures such as buying a scented candle or pampering yourself. It’s about nurturing your mental, emotional, and physical well-being. Self-love involves embracing yourself unconditionally, free from judgment or criticism.

It centres on showing compassion and acceptance towards yourself, loving every aspect of who you are without the inner critic and judgement. Regrettably, a lot of us encounter childhood trauma. Unfortunately, in my own experience, I was a victim of emotional neglect during childhood, where love and affection were scarce, primarily expressed through food and materialistic things.

During my therapy session, I mentioned to my therapist, “While I don’t struggle with confidence, self-expression, or emotional awareness, I feel a sense of inauthenticity within me that hinders my ability to love myself as deeply as I love others.”My therapist explained that the challenge in nurturing self-love, despite pride in achievements and societal success, stems from leaving behind a neglected inner child.
